Khoma

Our organization primarily works to improve the lives of Hijra women in Bangladesh. That being said, in order for anyone to initiate positive change among the community it is vital for everyone to understand their relationship to oneself and one another.

Thus, Sundar Kendro devised an experiment where we surveyed 700 Hijras where we internationally gave 10 different gifts among every 10 participants. Some received makeup and some received pencil boxes etc – the differences in presents were distributed in such manner. The experiment showed the differences in presents were not easily nor gracefully accepted by the participants. It led us to better understand these individuals and showed us how they psychologically function as an individual due to their long deprivation in society. We noticed they have a habit of not forgiving that easily. They have been used to a give and take culture which adversely slowed down their growth toward acceptance by the society. In order to bridge the gap, Sundar kendro held a workshop called “Khoma” which means to forgive. We held 10 workshops where we taught Hijras the practice of gratitude in one’s life and to further understand how to keep them away from negative emotions.
